D.B.N. Murthy was born on June 12, 1932 in Shimoga, Karnataka State. He is an engineer by profession with over forty years experience in the field of quality & management. His free-lance writing began ten years ago and has published articles in newspapers and magazines. He has two books to his credit. His other interests include travelling/trekking, playing contract bridge and listening to classical music.
To write an account of the life of a person is not always easy. The task becomes more difficult if that person happens to be one's own brother. And if the period to be covered is seventy-seven years, with little or no written records or accounts. But the task was made slightly easier by a few persons who were associated with Krishna Murti, whose life story is attempted in the book. His own sister Krishnavenamma has vivid memories of her association with him in the earlier years as well as when they had the medical practice together. Dr. Keshav Murthy is another person whose graphic accounts of his interaction with the Malnad Doctor helped to get an insight into the life of a person whose interests were truly remarkable. A number of his friends as well as patients have supplied much information about the Doctor spanning a period of nearly forty years.
There is no element of fiction included in the book. What has been done is to alter some of the names to protect individual's identity and thus ensure confidentiality. The events and cases are true, barring the exact names of the people involved. It would have taken much efforts and time to locate many of the thousands of patients whom the Doctor treated during his life time. Surely, that would have brought to light fascinating glimpses of the Doctor's outstanding skills of diagnosis and consequent line of treatment. But without such detailed cataloguing of cases, it is hoped that the book does not fall short of readers' expectations in this regard. This applies too to the numerous persons and institutions he helped. It is in the fitness of things that instances of his munificence are not given undue importance in deference to his lifestyle.
For sheer diversity of interests few can match the Doctor. Even a simple event like the presence of a red ant on a guava tree would excite his curiosity. His inquisitive mind would come up with the correlation between a monkey and the red ant. Whatever topic he chose to read or to study would be dealt with in depth.
