Uddhav J. Shelke (1931-1992) was a self-schooled, self-scanned and strife stricken first eminent creative "regional writer from Vidarbha in Maharashtra, a progressive state in India. It is not an exaggeration to state that he is the first outstanding modern writer after the great medieval Saint Namdev from a subculture group named as Namdev Shimpi. He began his career, after matriculation, as a short story writer and a novelist and soon bagged five state level literary awards, including the Government of Maharashtra awards. He belonged to the second generation of regional/rural writers. His novel Dhag and collection of short stories Shilan adhik Eight Katha are the milestones in the history of Modern Marathi rural literature. He was the first multilingual, multicultural, heteroglotic and more dialogic chronicler of Vidarbha. But soon he crossed the boundaries of regionalism and showed how one has to be regional in order to be universal. He is known for more than hundred books, two film scripts and other miscellaneous writings. His classic Dhag is translated in all major Indian languages. His works have appeared in a number of anthologies and are prescribed for studies in schools and universities.
Anand Balawant Patil (b. 1945) is a Reader in Comparative Literature, Department of English in Goa University. He is also a rural Marathi novelist popularly known as "Kagudwale Patil" and internationally recognized multilingual comparatist. He has a dozen Marathi, half a dozen English books and seven literary awards, including much coveted Government of Maharashtra Awards, to his credit. His novels, stories, travelogues, and pioneering works in the area of Comparative and Culture studies have beer included in many University syllabuses. He has traveled extensively not only in India, but also visited Europe twice, Bangladesh, China, and U.S.A. and Thailand. He is a well-known orator and performer of "Patil Aale Londonhoon"-Patil Returned from London. His research papers have appeared in international journals and anthologies.
