The established and the emerging trends in research point to two channels namely 'focussed study' and 'diverse participation' that substantially contribute to the comprehensive growth of Linguistics as a science. This book titled, "Trends in Applied Linguistics and Language in Use,' represents a fusion of both the channels. The editorial team is happy to present it as a collaborative outcome of two significant institutions of India. The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) and the Linguistic Society of India (LSI) are two institutions that have played a pivotal role in the scientific studies, documentation and promotion of languages in India. While CIIL offers tremendous academic resources and opportunities for language sciences, LSI provides dynamism and vibrancy to language studies and linguistic research in India. For these reasons, both CIIL and LSI are well-recognized for their contribution to Language Sciences and for binding together linguists across generations and research traditions. The two institutions have collaborated with harmonious and fruitful outcomes on numerous occasions.
The International Conference of Linguistic Society of India (ICOLSI), formerly known as All Indian Conference of Linguists (AICL), is an annual event among other occasions when both the institutions come together for a common goal. No wonder, the ICOLSI events often become the rallying point for early-career researchers and distinguished scholars representing a cross-section of academic disciplines and research traditions. The ICOLSI events are highly engaging; often described as a gateway to professional Linguistics.
In an amazing coincidence, the special number 40th annual conference of LSI and the 50th year of the establishment of CIII. were occurring in the same year. Therefore, a proposal to organize ICOLSI-40 at CIII. was submitted during the Annual General Body Meeting of the Society at the Indian Institute of Technology Patna. The proposal was accepted, and CIIL organized ICOLSI-40 from 05 to 07 December 2018. The historical city of Mysore known for its cultural and academic vibrancy proved to be a perfect host.
