Born in Munich, Germany, Lilienthal was granted his doctorate of medicine from the University of Munich in 1838. He migrated to America in 1839. He joined the faculty of the New York Homoeopathic Medical College in 1869, as chair of clinical medicine.
Lilienthal's Homoeopathic Therapeutics is well know to everybody in the profession. Somebody has rightly said, "For the fresh graduate this book will be invaluable. ...to the older one who says he has no use for this book, we have nothing to say. He is a good one to avoid when well, and to dread when ill." This is the only book of Lilienthal which we are aware of. Did he wrote any other gem? You will be surprised he did. We were also surprised when we discovered A Treatise on Diseases of the Skin by S. Lilienthal , M.D., in the library of Dana Ullman in California, who himself was unaware of the presense of the book in his library. This copy is Lilienthal’s own copy which is interleaved and has additional notes by the author in his own miniature writing.
Dr. Dana Ullman was kind enough to lend this copy to us for reprinting and making this gem available to the lovers of homoeopathy. This book is an antique published way back in 1876. The first and foremost task was to transcript the blackink miniature notes written by the author on the interleaved pages. A task easier said than done. This was achieved by our professional team of two editors namely Dr. Rohit Jain and Dr. Taru Bhagat who painstackingly deciphered word by word with the help of a handlens.
About two years ago, Messrs. Boericke & Tafel requested me to prepare a work on Diseases of the Skin, for the use of homeopathic practitioners, to be issued with the monthly parts of the Hahne- mannion Monthly, as an appendix to that journal. This treatise is the result of that request, the work having been done according to the best of my ability. While I have a perfect knowledge of its imperfection, I can conscientiously assert, that I have gleaned critically and carefully from the best authorities in regard to the pathology and therapeutics of these forms of disease. It is hoped that it has and will serve a good and useful present purpose with the physicians of the homoeopathic school, and be at the same time a foundation upon which a future perfect treatise may be based. But a small edition has been printed, and no stereotype plates have been used, and the publishers will, therefore, feel themselves free to issue a new and enlarged edition as soon as there shall appear to be a demand for it. In the meantime no labor will be spared to perfect the work, and assistance and contributions are requested from homeopathic practitioners in all parts of the world.
The second part of the work, the " Repertory,’? has been prepared exclusively by Clarence M. Conant, M.D., of Middletown, N. Y., who has performed his difficult task with characteristic ability, and to whom I hereby tender sincere thanks. I desire also to thank the editor of the Hahnemannian Monthly, Dr. R. J. McClatchey, for the careful supervision and proof-reading bestowed upon the entire work.
