About the Book
The Constitution of Nepal, 2015 is unique among the newer constitutions of the world in that it was adopted by an elected Constituent Assembly, with members coming in through direct elections or proportional representation. The long and heated arguments, the passionate discussions, the effort to reach logical compromises and solutions while upholding basic democratic values, ensuring empowerment of the deprived communities and identity groups, standing by the principle of social justice, defining federalism and delineating provinces, empowering local government, and confirming the concept of constitutionalism - all of this contributed to what is today the new Constitution of Nepal.

The Constitution upholds democratic principles, including the value and beliefs of competitive multiparty democracy. fundamental rights, adult franchise, periodic election, freedom of press, rule of law, and an independent, impartial and competent judiciary. With such principles as its foundations, the Constitution of Nepal, 2015 has established a system of governance as desired by the people. This document stands before the international community as one with modern values that Nepali citizens aspire for. At the same time, the Constitution is an organic document which may be amended as per the need, desire and demands of the people.

The cover image shows President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, first Head of State of the Republic, paying respects to the Constitution document immediately after its promulgation by the Constituent Assembly on 20 September 2015.
