World Wisdom Books is honored to make available this collection of articles by Frithjof Schuon on the sacred traditions of Buddhism and Shinto. Many of these chapters were previously published under the title In the Tracks of Buddhism; and while the present text contains all the original articles, others pertinent to the subject have been added, most of which were written since the initial work's publication in 1968 by George Allen & Unwin. It is unusual for the author to devote a volume exclusively to the spirituality of one great Revelation. Based on the success of Schuon's book Understanding Islam, the idea for a companion volume on Buddhism was suggested by Marco Pallis, translator of In the Tracks of Buddhism. The editors wish to acknowledge Mr. Pallis' efforts, of which much has been retained in this revised translation.
The leitmotif of Frithjof Schuon's entire corpus of writings is the philosophia perennis the timeless metaphysical truth underlying the diverse religions, whose written sources are the revealed Scriptures as well as the writings of the great spiritual masters. Readers familiar with Schuon's works will therefore not be surprised to find here references to the spiritual worlds of Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and others as well for, as Schuon has paraphrased a famous saying of Philip Duke of Orleans, "all that is traditional is ours.
