Book Description
About the Book
Today, humanity is at crossroads. We all feel tremendous anxiety, fear and unrest from terrorism and wars of various kinds. Thus every thinking person intensely yearns for harmony and peace in every corner of the globe. What are the ways and means for creating harmony and peace in this world where we have people with different cultures, religions, colors, nationalities, ideals, etc.? Could various religious traditions of the world guide humanity towards harmony and peace instead of being the cause of conflicts as seen in the past? Could interfaith dialogue provide some help at this critical juncture of humanity? Could the two most dominant forces of humanity in the quest of ultimate reality science and spirituality be integrated to lead us to a peaceful world?

Reflecting on some of these issues, the Delhi Peace Summit brings together in this volume the wisdom from some of the most prominent thinkers of the world including Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the President of India; Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India; six Nobel Laureates in Peace and three Nobel Laureates in Science. We sincerely hope that the volume will provide useful insights and practical actions towards a culture of harmony and peace to all the readers.

Acknowledgments
We volume grew out of a conference entitled "International Summit: Towards a Culture of Harmony and Peace" organized by Delhi Peace Summit in partnership with the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions (CPWR), Chicago, held at New Delhi, December 7-10, 2003. Many sincere persons have extended their help to bring out this volume.

First of all, we gratefully acknowledge the spontaneous help received from Dr. Mohinder Singh, Organizing Secretary of the Delhi Peace Summit who helped in various ways to bring out this volume.

Preface
We speak of a world that is often dismissed as cynical and hard-nosed. We condemn this world so frequently, and perhaps quite rightly, for all the awfulness there is in it, awfulness caused by us. All of us, without exception, have the capacity for the most incredible levels of evil. But that is just one side of the story. Do you know that we also have an incredible capacity for goodness? We shouldn't forget that. There is an instinct for goodness in this world. We admire a Nelson Mandela, we admire a Mother Teresa, we admire a Dalai Lama, because inside us there is something that instinctively recognizes genuine goodness. This world has got many awful things, but it also has some very beautiful things.

Introduction
Today, every thinking person feels an intense yearning for harmony and peace in every corner of the globe. The world is threatened by various forms of violence such as nuclear war, chemical and biological warfare, terrorism, etc. Recent world events have created tremendous anxiety, fear, and unrest in the lives of all of us. How can we achieve peace in the midst of this turmoil?

This volume, containing profound thoughts and insights from over forty prominent thinkers of the world, aims at generating some possible direction and guidance on harmony and peace for all of us at this most critical juncture of humanity. The volume grew out of the International Summit entitled "Towards a Culture of Harmony and Peace" organized by Delhi Peace Summit in partnership with the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions held at New Delhi from December 7-10, 2003. We have also included in this volume a few invited articles and messages from prominent scientists and leaders of the world including nine Nobel Laureates in Science and Peace. The volume is divided into six major sections.
