Preface

We accept and believe what the scientists have revealed by way of research, which is the enquiry into the wonderful aspects of the nature. It involves studying, copying, exploiting, and manipulating nature for our conveniences and comforts. There is no need for others to do research for themselves to reap the results. That is, we just enjoy the benefits accruing from the research done by scientists.

In the same way seers, saints, and prophets have enquired, meditated (or researched in the scientific sense) and revealed about God. However we do not believe in them on the same scale as we do with scientists. This is because we ourselves have to realize God. Whatever be the amount of explanation on God, it may not be possible for us to believe and accept the truth as it is beyond the scientific proof. However in this case we can know the truth provided we ourselves do involve in enquiry and meditation with faith. Just believing is different from attaining God. To attain God, one has to follow the preaching or what the wise men or the devotees have told which we find as the most difficult to follow.

Scientific research needs deep thinking (a type of meditation) and use of some existing or fabricated material things (such as instruments) or some new instruments to assist the research work undertaken whereas the spiritual meditation needs initially discipline, introspection, and determination. Scientific research is a continuous process consciously and further research is based on the previous one or continued from it by somebody. In spirituality, it is different. Everybody has to start with himself from the initial stage. Here also there is continuity or further improvement but unconsciously by the same person in successive births or under the guidance of a true guru (teacher). The benefits of scientific research are handed over to future generation and can be enjoyed by all. Hence it is considered as non-selfish. Whereas in spiritual setup also, there is research but it is on soul and God. In this there is introspection forgetting the material world. It needs 'Self-absorption, 'Self-satisfaction, and 'Self-preoccupation. Hence it is wrongly construed and dubbed as selfishness by most of the Westerners as well as others. It is not so. There are so many who have revealed the way for harmonious life by stressing discipline and 'love' as the foremost for living. Some have spiritually uplifted others especially their disciples. Then how can it be called selfish? Is Jesus selfish? Is Thiruvalluvar selfish? Is Mohammed selfish? Is Ramalinga Adigal selfish? Of course, they lived only for the people. Moreover, spirituality has the highest goal of avoiding births and deaths. Spirituality seeks serenity of the individual mind and at the same time for the general harmony among people. Spirituality strives to find a solution for the self-imposed miseries in life. Spirituality provides a meaning for life. Spirituality is in constant search for eternity.
