It contains, on the whole, 1240 inscriptions listed and arranged according to the pro- forma mentioned in the Preface to the first volume. It covers villages in the nine taluks into which the district is divided- Ambasamudram (1 to 424): Kovilpathi (425 to 563); Nan- guneri (564 to 666); Sankara- nayinarkoyil (667 to 697): Shonkottah (698 to 701): Sri- vaikuntam (702 to 803): Ten- kasi (804 to 872): Tiruchendur (873 to 1062) and Tirunelveli (1063 to 1246). However, as The districts of the taluks have been delimited in recent times, the references given in this volume should be taken as those of old division.
The value of this and the other volumes of this series lies in the fact that they present various facets of the political, social, economic, religious and cultural life of the people of this region in the ancient and early medieval period of history. This material can be fruitfully used for restructuring several unknown aspects of history and polity.
