This monograph presents my studies on the art of Andhra Pradesh from seventh to sixteenth century A.D. Studies in Andhra Temple art and architecture have long been neglected and to date few prominent temple sites have received the attention of the scholars. In the present monograph I have attempted to give a connected account of the development of art in different regions of Andhra Pradesh. Dynastic labels have been avoided and the region as a geo- graphical and cultural unit has been taken into consideration in analysing the art traditions. Of course, for the Vijayanagar times, the dynastic name has been retained for its impact throughout South India is indeed great though each region's distinctive idiom is highlighted.
In the preparation of the monograph I have been benefited by the valuable advice and help from Prof. R. Subrahmanyam and for several acts of kindness I am grateful. My thanks are due to Sri R. Siva Prasad and K. Raghunath for typing the manuscript with interest and enthusiasm; and to P. Sangamesvara Rao for the preparation of the plan drawing.
