Book Description
About The Book

Tarunyasatakam is a book of mellifluous self- standing Sanskrit stanzas on the description of youth and love by Kshirod Chandra Dash (b. 1954), the Akademi award winning (State & National) Sanskrit poet of India. Each of the stanzas with a story in miniature airs passion and voices love that holds the reader spellbound till the end. With a publication of numerous Sanskrit lyrical gems to his credit, the poet is an author, translator, research visionary and literary critic who retired from Odisha Education Service as Head of the Department of Sanskrit, B.J.B (Autonomous) College (Utkal University), Bhubaneswar after reaching the age of superannuation on April, 2012. The translation of Kavivara Radhanatha Ray’s Cilikā (tr. Sanskrit lyric) and Gandhijī’s autobiography Mama Satya-prayoga- kathā (tr.) etc. are also some of his note worthy contributions to the domain of Sanskrit literary art.

About the Author

Dr.Subhasree Dash , M.A., M.Phil, Ph.D with uniformly brilliant academic career has specialised in Sanskrit grammar, poetics and classical literature. With numerous publications to her credit both in national and international journals of repute, she has been teaching as an Assistant Professor in Sanskrit, Ravenshaw University, Cuttack since 2013.

Preface

The Tarunyasatakam is the Odisha Sahitya Akademi award winning Sanskrit lyric (1992) by the poet Kshirod Chandra Dash. The book has drawn the attention of numerous readers and its verses are prescribed as the text book for Council of Higher secondary Education, Odisha, BJB Autonomous College, Bhubaneswar and Ravenshaw University, Cuttack for quite a long period. The popularity of the book inspired me to undertake the responsibility of its edition with critical notes and English translation. The text is enriched with the Sanskrit commentary entitled the Prakasika by Prof. Braja Kishore Nayak, a distinguished poet, scholar and critic in the field of Sanskrit literary study. The book Tarunyasatakam has been edited from two more available manuscripts collected from poet's residence and has been freed from prevalent typological/printing errors.

This research work has been conducted under the auspices of the supervision of my revered teacher Professor Dr. Kishore Chandra Padhy, a renowned Sanskritist and ex-Vice-chancellor, Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya, Puri. He is gracious enough to enrich my knowledge with appropriate changes and corrections at every step till the completion of this academic venture. In this work each of the verses of the text is enriched with anvaya (prose order of the verses), English, odia and Hindi translation with grammatical notes - prakrti-pratyaya, samasa. Besides, the literary theories and critical vocabularies of Sanskrit poetics (alamkarasastras) have been applied at different sections with linguistic analysis and interpretation. A separate section has been devoted to the application of Sanskrit metrical principles on the text. The 'work cited' has been incorporated at the end of each chapter for clarity of presentation and distinguished elucidation. One copy of the Sanskrit commentary entitled the Prakasika, made available in odia-script, has been edited appropriately and incorporated in the text. This humble endeavour envisions to present this text for the pleasure of the connoisseurs of literary art in general and scholars of Sanskrit erudition in particular.

Foreword

Tarunyasatakam is an award winning Sanskrit lyric by the poet Kshirod Chandra Dash. In a melodious voice the poet sings the joy of youth and love.

Dr. Subhasree Dash, Assistant Professor in Sanskrit, Ravenshaw University has prepared the critical edition and the translation (English & Odia) of the text with the Prakasika commentary offered by a renowned Sanskritist Prof Dr. B.K.Nayak. Besides, the Hindi-translation offered by Professor Dr. A.K. Patnaik, a famous scholar in the field of Hindi language and literature adds beauty to the text.

This is a noteworthy research work where the text is interpreted with the application of Sanskrit literary theories and critical vocabularies enunciated by the Alamkarasastras of India at different centuries.

Revealing the critical literary wisdom of the editor it is an essential contribution to modern Sanskrit language and literature. I hope the work shall elicit the appreciative attention of the lovers of Sanskrit literary art.
