Foreword It gives me great pleasure in placing this text of Tarkāmṛta of Jagadiśa with its commentary called Tarkāmṛta-tarangini of Mukundabhatta in the hands of scholars of Indian intellectual traditions in general and of Nyāya Vaiśeşika system of philosophy and logic in particular.

I wish that this text is studied with all seriousness in order to develope good foundation to take up the study of Indian logic and epistemology meaningfully.

If constructive comments are conveyed by the scholars, they will help in bringing out improvements in the next edition.

Preface The Tarkāmṛta of Jagadiśa Tarkālańkāra is a mature manual on the Nyaya Vaiśeşika metaphysics and logic. It has included many topics which did not find a place in the most popular manual namely, the Tarkasangraha of Anambhatta. Thus, Takāmṛta is more elaborate and at the same time a compact kind of Introduction to the Nyāyavaiśeşika logic and epistemology. It has a capacity to serve a good introduction to Navya Nyaya as well. Here we find, perhaps, the first attempt to relate the study of Nyāyavaiśeşika metaphysics to the philosophical enquiry of the Upaniṣads. Jagadiśa beautifully says that since the Upaniṣadic injunction "आत्मा वा अरे द्रष्टव्यः, श्रोतव्यः मन्तव्यः निदिध्यासितव्यः" prompts one who is desirious of salvation or self-realisation to śravaņa, manana and mididhyāsana, he has to known the self as distinct from every thing other than the self. But how is it possible unless one knows the entire world? This necessity prompts one to get acquainted with the catagorisation of the whole universe and exactly this is the subject-matter of the Nyāyavaiśeşika system of philosophy. This is how we find the system of Nyāyavaiśeşika has been shown as related to philosophical enquiry (ātama-vidyā). This is how the Tarkāmṛta of Jagadiśa is based on a wider frame-work of philosophical logic. When I realised this fact, I decided to study this Text - very closely. One such way of close study in our tradition is to study the text with some commentary. I wanted to do that.
