I have been closely associated with Acárya Maháviiránanda Avadhúta since 1968. At that time he was posted at Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh. He is very simple-mannered in his personal life as well as a committed, dedicated missionary, fully devoted to Baba and His mission.
His collection "The tantric Guru: Enchanting Stories of His Life" is a compilation of vivid experiences of many Baba devotees. I can firmly say that this book will definitely raise the level of devotion towards our loving and beloved Baba so that one can feel His close proximity. His sincere effort to collect the valuable and inspiring experiences of so many devotees including his own experiences with Baba and to put all these into book form
is really a praiseworthy task. I wish that this book will be a source of inspiration to feel that Baba is my own personal property.
I thank Ácárya Maháviiránanda Avadhúta for his endeavor. And I thank all those who helped him by sharing their valuable experiences, through which this "The tantric Guru: Enchanting Stories of His Life" is now in our hands.
It is not easy to write a book on such a vast and lofty subject
like Tantra - a body of intuitional knowledge that has undergone degeneration over the last 3000 years or so under the crunching weight of superstition, dogma, and the emergence of materialistic and theocratic philosophies. It is even more difficult to write with authority on the Guru, because He is beyond mortal comprehension. What complicates the matter further is that a purely scholarly approach to understanding Tantra and the Guru will not do justice to either practitioners of the art or to those who wish to practise it. A different approach is needed to inspire them, one that is experiential.
History tells us that the first Tantric Master who organised the disparate practices of Tantra into an integrated system and body of knowledge was Lord Shiva, who lived about 7000 years ago. The practice of Tantra was further refined by Lord Krśńa about 3500 years ago. Lord Anandamúrtiji, lovingly called Bábá by His disciples, not only sublimated the spiritual practice to suit the subtle evolutionary changes in the physical and mental structures of the present human being, but also added new knowledge to the practice and philosophy of Tantra.
It is with this context in mind that we have endeavoured to collect the different experiences of the disciples of Lord Anandamúrtiji. who lived from 1921-1990, so that readers might have a close up view of the path, the disciple treading the path, and the role of the Guru.
This book would not have been possible without the help of the many devotees of Bábá, who went through great difficulty to collect, check, and verify the stories being published; those who translated the stories from their original Indian languages to the English language; those who helped to edit and proofread the stories: those who helped to type the manuscript; those who provided useful suggestions to strengthen the text; those who designed the cover page; and finally those who advanced the funds to get the book published. To all of them, I convey my deepest gratitude and brotherly love. However, for the sake of uniformity and to encourage the spirit of humility, we have taken editorial license to exclude the names of all those who have helped to make this work a reality.
Finally, this book would not have seen the light of day without Bábá's sanction. To Him I offer my heart-felt thanks for giving all of us the inspiration to publish this wonderful book.
I sincerely hope readers will benefit from this book.
