The aspiration to write this book has been present within me ever since the very young age when I first came to Shillong and happened to visit Brook Side" I was so fascinated by the fact that Rabindranath Tagore had lived in that house during his stay in 1919 I was overjoyed to step into the house, and almost felt as if I had come on a pilgrimage This urge to research more about Tagore only intensified over time when I further came to know that Tagore had actually visited Shillong thrice, As I searched in academic circles, I noted very little had been written about the times Tagore spent in Shillong, though there were enough references to his works inspired by his Shillong visits. But I continued to remain steadfast in my conviction My research got further challenged when I had to go from door to door to gather information on the topic, including meeting various veterans and senior citizens of Shillong, of whom several have since passed away.
The information was in bits and pieces. I spent countless hours in several libraries and organizations of Shillong, in the hope of finding something informative on this topic, but often I returned feeling dejected and frustrated. Besides, I had no access to the Internet, in those days, and my only resource was the print media. In January 1980, with a view to collect some materials on Tagore's Visit to Shillong, I went to Shantiniketan, and met Dr. Surajit Sinha, the then Vice Chancellor of Visva Bharati University, and Shri Jagadindra Bhowmick who was in charge of Tagore's Manuscript Department, Viswa Bharati.
