India is endowed with a rich legacy of traditional knowledge and practices touching almost all spheres of life and traversing several domains of science and technology. These practices showcase the rich and continued tradition of great scholarship of this ancient land. They embody the synergy between human needs and nature, and represent the true spirit of sustainability in the global as well as local contexts. With the passage of time, we as a society are becoming oblivious of these indigenous contributions, and in some instances, we have been witnessing erosion in people's faith in our traditional knowledge. Other issues that plague the traditional knowledge are misinterpretation of facts and unsubstantiated claims. Creating awareness by sharing evidence-based traditional practices/knowledge among the public is thus of paramount importance to instill a sense of pride and confidence in the knowledge that we have inherited.
Recognising the importance of the Indian traditional knowledge, Hon'ble Prime Minister and President of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Society, Shri Narendra Modi emphasised the need to communicate effectively the scientifically validated traditional knowledge to the public at large. His pursuance led to the birth of the national initiative on communicating India's scientifically validated traditional knowledge. CSIR was directed to spearhead these efforts in collaboration with knowledge partners across the country. CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NISEPR) was assigned as the nodal organisation to implement the national initiative. A steering committee consisting of eminent experts from various fields on traditional knowledge was formed for this purpose.
