Dr. Mangalagowri V Rao, obtained her BAMS from Government Ayurveda College, Bangalore, her M.D. in Swasthavritta, from Government Ayurveda College, Kerala University and Ph.D. in Swasthavritta from BHU, Varanasi. She served as Lecturer in Swasthavritta at SSRB Rural Ayurvedic Medical College, Inchal, and ALN Rao Memorial Ayurvedic Medical College, Koppa in Karnataka before joining as Medical Officer, at Govt. of NCT through UPSC. She is presently working as Associate Professor in the Department of Swasthavritta and Yoga, Banaras Hindu University. She also served as Associate Professor and head of Department of Swasthavritta, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for 3 years. She has published several books, chapters in books, scientific papers. She is known globally through her lectures delivered through national and international conferences. She has been member of editorial board in several journals. She has been adorned with many Awards at International and National platforms.
Swasthavritta is an important branch of Ayurveda. It deals with practical application of core principles of Ayuveda like Ayurvedic lifestyle. dieteties for excellence of health and prevention of diseases in the public. In present scenario, Ayurvedic lifestyle comprising of Dinacharya, Ratricharya, Ritucharya. Sadvritta, Achara Rasayana along with Yoga is gaining importance globally. Diet the key factor for health and disease, form the most sought-out topics in the national and international scientific community. The contemporary knowledge about concept and principles of primary health care, existing health care facility, national programmes, role of Ayurveda in national health policy, reseach and data collection and presentation etc. are included in Swasthavritta to update Ayurveda graduates to fit into the present healthcare scenario. Thus, Swasthavritta is a subject that grooms, the BAMS student by providing multiple skills in above mentioned vital areas.

Knowledge appraisal is a constant process for progress in any field, especially in the education sector. Hence, the syllabi are updated with essential current topics periodically to make the learner efficient to cater to the present needs. The first edition of textbook of Svasthavetta was one among the foremost books in English, by an expert in Swasthavritta as per the CCIM syllabus of that time. Presently, the syllabus has been updated so the contents of the book have been upgraded and remodeled to provide all details comprehensively, in a simple and effective manner. The topics are arranged as per the current Swasthavritta syllabus designed for BAMS course. Hoping that book would benefit the MD (Ay.) students also. The chapters include the references from Brhattrayis and Laghu Trayis along with other ancient classics like Muhurta Märtända, Mayamate, Manusmrti, Pathyapathya Vinirnaya etc. Essential important commentaries of Cakrapani. Dalhana and Arunadatta have also been included, to give an insight into the topics.
The unique feature of the book is style of presentation. The topics are explained in simple English with Sanskrit words in between to facilitate understanding and retain the real meaning intact. The contents of Swasthavritta and Yoga syllabus has been comprehensively included, in concise way including all important and essential points. The new feature of this edition is important points given in the beginning, to generate interest among the students. These highlights are helpful in memorizing the most important points and also provide keys for short answer questions of the chapter. Both classical and contemporary views are analyzed thoroughly and presented sequentially, to enable the understanding of Ayurvedic concepts in better way.
