INTRODUCTION

The Selected discourses of the Buddha'. Part Three, (Sutta Sangaho Vol-3), is an anthology of Thirty-four Suttas culled from Samyutta Nikaya - The Connected Discourses of the Buddha. Anguttara Nikaya - The Numerically Arranged Discourses of the Buddha, Majjhima Nikāya - The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha and Khuddaka Nikaya - The Compact collections of different works.

The first Sutta of this book is entitled "Mahācunda Thera Bojjhanga" - The Protective Discourse chanted by the Venerable Mahacunda on the Enlightenment Factors. In this Sutta, Venerable Mahacunda recited the Seven Factors of Enlightenment in front of the Buddha, while the Lord was unwell. These Bojjhangas were enunciated by the Buddha himself. After contemplating on these enlightenment factors the Lord was cured from his ailment.

The next two Suttas are recorded, how the Lord himself pronounced the seven Factors of Enlightenment in front of the sick Theras, the Venerable Mahamoggallana and Venerable Mahākassapa and how both of them were cured of their ailments.

Dhajagga Sutta deals with the qualities of the Triple Gem - the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha. When one recites the qualities of the Triple Gem, whatever fear or trepidation seizes the mind, that forthwith disappears. Because of their inherent spiritual qualities, the mind becomes freed from greed, hatred and delusion.

The Süriya Paritta and Candima Paritta describe how the two Devaputtas Suriya and Candima were freed from the captivity of Rahu, the Demon Chief, when they took refuge in the Triple Gem. When these divinities sought refuge in the Lord, they were freed by the inherent spiritual qualities of the Buddha.
