Vedas are the ancient Hindu Scriptures, which in ancient India were preserved through memory and were handed over by word-of-mouth from one generation to second generation, by a guru to the disciple. The knowledge kept increasing as the life went on, by observations and realization of truth.
Vedas are the collection of all the knowledge which may be required mankind, not only on spiritual path but in all matters of life. by The knowledge of Vedas kept transferring from guru to the disciple till the great Rishi Vyasa wrote down all the knowledge on Bhoja-patram and Palmyrah into four volumes, Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharvana Veda. Each volume has three parts mantra, brahamana and Upanishad. Since Upanishad is the last portion of each volume, these are also called Vedanta, Veda + Anta (Anta means the end), i.e. the final or the ultimate teachings of Vedas. The Upanishads are also called Arnnakas; the books to be studied in the calm atmosphere of Himalayas.
The Vedas start with the poetry, inspired by the forests, rivers, clouds, mountains, Sun, Moon, trees, rain, wind and the beauty of the entire nature. This is the mantra part of the Vedas.
The later part of the Vedas, called Brahamana, deals with the prayers, worship and rituals to please the gods. There are sacred methods to invoke the power regulating the nature to fulfill desires and for getting blessings. This section covers very detailed and scientific instructions of rituals to be followed to get the blessings of the spiritual powers to fulfill the desires of the devotee.
As the time passed the intellectuals found rituals not important and discovered a better path to find the truth. Their philosophical search brought them to a conclusion that God is not outside but within each individual. The theory and the experiences are given in the end portion of the Vedas and are called Upanishads.
