Sukumar Ray was the first humorist in Bengali literature. His witty poems, anarchic plays and hilarious stories have enchanted many generations of readers. Many phrases invented by him have become a part of the Bengali language.
Sukumar Ray was a poet, writer, illustrator and publisher. His collection of poems, 'Abol Tabol', and the novel 'Ha-ja-ba-ra-la' are classics. He died at thirty six, but in his short span of writing years he gave Bengal one of its finest children's magazines, 'Sandesh'. Filling its pages with nonsense rhymes, satirical plays and magical stories, all illustrated in his unique cartoon style.
Sukumar Ray introduced humour to Indian Literature and his irrepressible voice still fills our lives with an innocent insanity and the unadulterated joy of laughter.
