People, ideas and efforts have always fascinated me. Dr. Jagriti Luthra Prassana's book is one such fascinating labour of love. Not just love alone but the love of art. That too the art of Divinity. It is her family's Khanqahi connect with a Dargah that draws all musicians of north India regardless of their faith and caste. The Chishtia Niyazia order of Bareilly. Through this silsila one embarks on several journeys. This is one such endeavour... to seek out the essence of Nusrat's singing. To trace the origins of Sufism and evolution of the Silsilas, the poetic traditions and position them in the musical journey of the subcontinent. All this to understand a genre of singing that revolutionised the world. It created time and space for a spiritual experience in the most unexpected way in the remotest of places. As she journeys through Nusrat's life, she continues to explore the tenets of eastern Sufism. She discovers the beauty of poetry of Attar, Rumi and Khusrau. "Sufism" has come to mean a vast range of beliefs that center on the quest for personal enlightenment in the union with God.
Sufis are sometimes described as mystics of Islam, but Sufism fits awkwardly in the categories of the religion. Technically Sufism is a denomination of Islam, however, there are many Sufis that are not Muslims and there are many Muslims that are reluctant to consider Sufism as the part of Islam. One of the few concepts that Sufis seems to agree on is that all religions offer a path to salvation or enlightenment and that true God realization, no matter how it is achieved, transcends the limitation and classification of any religion. Basically, a Saint in one religion is equal to a Saint of any other religion because both are inspired by the same divine source. Initially the term "SUFI" reffered only to those who had achieved God Realization, but it has since come to be applied to anyone who follows that particular spiritual path. The name Sufi comes from "SUF", The Arabian word for wool or "SAF" and the Persian word for pure.
Sufi Music is the devotional music of the Sufis, inspired by the works of Sufi poets like Rumi, Hafiz, Bulleh Shah, Khwaja Gulam Farid, Shah Hussain, etc. "In other words, Sufi Music is a tradition of music wherein Sufism and Sufi Philosophy are presented through Sufi poems interwoven with music in Sufi style."
