Legendary filmmaker Jean Renoir had come to Calcutta to make his film, The River. He had selected a few skilled men to assist him through an advertisement in The Statesman. All three of them in later days became world renowned personalities in their own rights. They were Satyajit Ray, Subrata Mitra and Bansi Chandragupta. They never had to look back after that. Ray's Apu trilogy of Pather Panchali, Aparajito and Apur Sansar, adapted from Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's novels, were the collaborative efforts of these three creators. Films that will forever remain etched in the history of world cinema.
None of them is physically present with us today. Subrata Mitra managed to create remarkable images using limited equipment and technology in the 1950s. He left a body of work that made him world famous as a cinematographer and he will remain so for years to come.
Today, on behalf of the West Bengal Heritage Commission, we have collected a few articles and images from his near and dear ones to pay our respect to this painter of light. We are grateful to them for their contribution. We pay our humble homage to one of the greatest cinematographers in the world of cinema and a pride of Kolkata.
