The British rule and the consequent throttling of the native industry and productive forces of India led to the disintegration of what was once called the 'village republics' by Karl Marx. India was shaken to the roots and its cultural distinction, political system and economic independence were subjugated by a ruthless alien rule. Nevertheless the same autocratic administration was indirectly responsible for fusing the multi-lingual India into a single nation and building up, although in small steps, the new awakening in the soul of India.
The net result was the rejuvenation of the master spirit of India that culminated in the historic freedom movement. S. Ramakrishnan remarks:
"He (Bharati) was the child and at once the architect of this historic national democratic revolution"
In other words, Subramania Bharati was a bard of freedom who had the dual role of freeing Tamil language from the clutches of conservatism and neo-classicism and freeing Bharat from the despotic foreign domination.
