Book Description
Foreword
The Nyayavartika of Udyotakara is an important work belonging to the old Nyaya• So far no detailed study of that work has appeared in any language, though the different Histories of Indian Philosophy, published by eminent scholars-like Dr, Surendranath Das Gupta has something to say about old Nyaya and Udyotakara. That gap has now been filled by the present work of Dr. Dayashankar Shastri, entitled :

This work is in 12 chapters and expounds in detail in Hindi what Udyotakara has to say on the sixteen padarthas, enumerated by Gautam. The four pramanas, accepted by Nyaya, are discussed in detail and how the others come under anumana is shown with great lucidity. Apart from the accepted four pramanas, much has been said of prama-and pramanas in general which will be of great use to a studend of any system of Indian Philosophy. The chapter on is particularly interesting as it throws a great deal of light on ancient Nyaya ethics. The last chapter gives briefly the arguments by which the views of some other philosopher are refuted and gives a completeness to the work.

On the whole, this young scholar, Dr. Dayashankar Shastri is to be congratulated on his success in his attempt to present a lucid exposition of the views of a philosopher, reputed to be difficult to understand who, however, forms an important link in the history of Indian Philosophy.
