The chapters of this book consist of lectures given in the University of London during the years I had the pleasure of serving as a Honorary Lecturer on the staff of University college and the School of Oriental Studies. Although I have made some emendations, they are printed as they were given. Certain passages have already appared in print. I have to acknowledge these to Faber & Faber, the Oxford Press, the Tagore Society, the India society and the editor of the Listener, editors Burlington Magazine And Apollo.
I hope that this volume will recall to my students pleasant memories of the days they spent in the squares, libraries and laboratories of a University whose doors have stood wide open to all, students and teachers alike, who seek understanding as well as learning.
