Book Description
From the Jacket

It is a collection of thirty essays on various aspects of Hindu and Buddhist Art and Iconography contributed by Indian and foreign scholars. These represent deep insight and new interpretation based on sound scholarship and accounts. While intended to commemorate the loving memory of Professor Kalyan Kumar Dasgupta, the book is a fitting tribute to the great savant. Professor P.K. Mishra and publisher M/s Abhinav Publications have spared no pains to make it an outstanding publication of the year.

PREFACE

Bengal has produced great historians and scholars in Indology. The Department of Ancient Indian History and Culture of Calcutta University was considered the centre for advanced research and a trend setter. Late Kalyan Kumar Dasgupta former Rani Bageswari Professor of Indian Art was a product of the above Department. Having served the Department as a Teacher for over thirty years he had also served the Kalyani University as its Vice-Chancellor for a full term of four years before adorning the Rani Bageswari Chair. He was well known for his deep erudition and scholarship on various aspects of Indian history and culture. The details of his academic achievements have been furnished in the Felicitation Volume Aspects of Indian History and Historiography (Kaveri Book, 1997, New Delhi) separately for the appraisal of all. As a friend and admirer of this ardent worshipper of Clio we thought it proper to commemorate his memory by dedicating a prestigious volume with learned contributions from the established scholars of India and abroad. In translating our dream into reality we were fortunate enough to obtain the ungrudging and timely cooperation of many scholars whose love and respect for Professor Dasgupta has completely beholden us. Their response was quite overwhelming. While craving the indulgence of the leaned contributors for the delay in publication, we convey our deep sense of gratitude to each of them for approving as a modest gift to the intellectual luminary of Bengal by his friends and admirers.

This volume carries thirty articles divided into two sections thematically. The efforts of the contributors and the Editor will be deemed a success if the volume as a whole is well received by the students of Indology in our country and abroad.

We are indebted to M/s Abhinav Publications, New Delhi for undertaking the Publication of the book. We also express our thanks to all those who evinced keen interest and supported our efforts to bring out the present volume.
