For a Vedantic school Brahmasutras are central. Even the customary title of Bhasyakara is accorded to one who writes a commentary on the Brahmasutras. Among the many bhasyas, those composed by Sankracarya, Ramaujacarya and Madhvacarya are most popular and widely read.
The bhasya of Sri Madhvaćarya is brief and many commentators have explained his views in great detail. Our former Chairman and Hon Director late Prof. K. T. Pandurangi took great pain to publish many of those commentaries from our Foundation. That multi-volume publication had three direct commentaries, called tikas, of which the Tattvaprakasika of Sri Jayatirtha is elaborate and studied popularly. We also included nine sub-commentaries, called tippanis in that previous publication.
Later, Prof. Pandurangi collected a manuscript of Prameyamuktavali another sub-commentary on the tattvaprakasika. Prameyamuktavali is a work of Sri Tamraparni Srinivasacarya. He has actually written two sub-commentaries Väkyärtha-muktavali and Prameyamuktavali. The former is published in the multi-volume publication mentioned earlier, and I am happy that the second work is also seeing the light of the day with this publication.
Prameyamuktavali is an advanced research work and not a tippani that can be used by a beginner. This sub-commentary will be extremely useful for those interested to do a comparative and in-depth study of multiple commentaries and sub-commentaries, with a special emphasis on praćina-tikas, as the author refers to many of them and provides a summary or a reconciliation.
I offer my sastanga pranamas to Sri Sri Satyatmatirtha Swamiji, the head of Sri Uttaradi Math and the chief patron and advisor of DVSRF. I also offer my pranamas to Sri Sri Suvidyendratirtha Swamiji for guiding the editor in resolving some errors in the manuscript. I respectfully pay my gratitudes to late Prof. K.T. Pandurangi who envisioned this publication.
