Book Description
Introduction

Like the Bhagavat Gita, Chandi is very dear to the Hindus and is chanted, every day, by many as a very favourite scripture. There are many English knowing people who do not know Sanskrit, again there are others whose knowledge in Sanskrit is very scanty and they cannot follow the meaning properly. For those English knowing people this English translation of Chandi will be of great use to understand the meaning of the precious scripture. In this work the running translation, notes on different passages, explanations of allusions and the glossary have been given. Besides these, the running translation of Pradhanik Rahasya, Murti Rahasya, Devi Kabacha, prayer to Argala and Kilaka hymns has found place in this. Devi Sukta and meditation on the Supreme Goddess with translation have also been included for the benefit of the readers.

Perhaps it would not be out of place to make some reference here to the propagation of glory of the Goddess by the Hindus from very ancient times. There was a renowned sage called Medhas. He was a man of extraordinary calibre and learning and a seer of truth. He narrated the glory of the Goddess to king Suratha and Samadhi Vaisya. The king had been deprived of his kingdom by his strong powerful enemies and Samadhi was also driven away by his wife, sons and relatives out of sheer greed for wealth.

The king Suratha and Samadhi, under instruction of the sage propitiated the Goddess with extreme devotion and by Her grace, the former regained the lost territory and emancipation the latter liberation from rebirth. This play of the Divine Mother was afterwards described by Markandeya to his disciple Bhaguri who again narrated the same to Pingakya, Virudha, Suputra and Sumukha, the four sons of Drona. These sages (said to have been turned into birds under a curse by some sage) narrated the same to Jaimini, the disciple of Vyasa. In this way the glories of the Mother came to be prevalent from very ancient times.

According to a different school of thought Jaimini, the disciple of Vyasa, after hearing vast scriptures from his spiritual guide, went with a view to know the ultimate Truth about Brahman, to the sage Markandeya and asked him several questions. Some say that after studying the Mahabharata some doubts arose in his mind and with a view to solve them he went to his spiritual guide Vyasa who for want of time advised him to approach his disciple Markandeya but he, too, did not instruct Jaimini on the same ground. And he also advised the inquisitive aspirant (Jaimini) to go to the above mentioned four sons of the sage Drona, who had been staying on the Vindya hills. Jaimini then went to them who, in reply to the querry of the sage, described unto him the glory of the Supreme Goddess who is Brahman and the ultimate Truth, In this way the glory of the Divine Mother spread among people from very ancient times.
