CENTENARY OF RAMANA ASHRAM: A LEGACY OF SELF-REALIZATION AND UNIVERSAL COMPASSION.
Nestled in the foothills of Arunachala, a sacred mountain in Tamil Nadu, lies Sri Ramanasramam, a spiritual haven radiating peace and self-exploration. Established in 1922, the ashram marks its centenary in 2023, commemorating a century of profound spiritual influence on seekers worldwide. More than just a physical space, Ramana Ashram embodies the teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, a modern sage who awakened to the Self at the tender age of sixteen.
Ramana Maharshi's teachings, rooted in Advaita Vedanta, emphasized the fundamental unity of existence and the attainment of Self-realization through Self- enquiry. His simple yet profound message resonated with people from all walks of life, transcending cultural and religious boundaries. The ashram, built around his presence, became a magnet for seekers, offering a space for contemplation, meditation, and spiritual growth.
The ashram's history is interwoven with the life of Ramana Maharshi, Initially, he resided in a cave on Arunachala, attracting devotees who walked up the hill. In 1922, he moved down the hill and a permanent structure was erected to accommodate the growing number of visitors. The ashram gradually expanded, adding buildings for various purposes, including a library, a hospital, and a printing press.
Despite the outward growth, the core of the ashram remained unchanged. The focus was always on individual spiritual practice and the pursuit of Self-knowledge. Ramana Maharshi's guidance and teachings were central to this process. He would patiently answer questions, clarify doubts, and guide seekers towards the path of self-realization. His presence itself radiated a profound peace and stillness, offering a glimpse into the ultimate reality.
