From 1905 to 1910, Sri Aurobindo was one of the principal leaders of the new brand of political leaders known as the Nationalists. He was also the primary strategist behind the demand for purna swaraj, complete independence from British rule, a demand that definitively changed the face of Indian politics. The programmes he put forward at that time boycott, swadeshi, non-cooperation, and passive resistance became the means by which India eventually won her independence in 1947.
This book comprises passages from Sri Aurobindo's speeches, newspaper editorials, and writings on his political life. From them emerges a remarkable portrait of inspired leadership. He worked not only to gain India's political freedom but to prepare her for a role on a far larger stage. He envisioned a spiritual life that would take up all human activities and change the very nature of life in the world. This compilation from his writings and speeches reveals the development of his political thought, his vision of a rejuvenated India reclaiming her spiritual heritage, and her mission to play a major role in the progress of human unity.
