Sphota has been a very much discussed topic in many systems of philosophy. Some scholars opine that The Greek concept of logos best conveys the meaning of sphota. There has been a very thorough analysis of this topic in Vyakarana and Vedanta too. The real word or the real sphota is the 'Brahman' itself and it is the Ultimate Reality. The school of Grammar upholds the theory of akhandavakyasphota, which means that the indivisible sentence is sphota (the whole utterance is a significant unitary symbol or Sphota as a sentence is a whole entity and hence unanalyzable.) Dhvani and Sphota are apparently different that sphota is inherent word-meaning and dhvani is the conveyer-belt of meaning. According to Bhartrihari, Sphota is the cause of the real word while dhvani is used to convey the meaning.
Mahakavi Prof. G.B. Palsule is an acclaimed Sanskrit Grammarian who made a thorough analysis of Sphota in this treatise. This work carefully compiles and thoroughly analyses many theories of word and sentence in language. Prof. Saroja Bhate, an equally acclaimed Sanskrit Grammarian of International reputaion, has kindly made available a final copy of this treatise and permitted our University to publish it in the sacred memory of Prof. G. B. Palsule. She is kind enough to provide a scholarly preface too. I offer my salutations with gratitude to both these respected scholars.
