Sphoorthi Padham is a wonderful composition of wisdom of pearls that are picked up from various ancient books of our culture. Sri B S Sarma ji has been known for his inclination towards the Dharmic progress of the country, spirituality and social service. Having been active through various social and spiritual organisations, he had penned a few of his thoughts on these shlokas that he chose to throw some light on, which make the readers think.
The book is full of directions and principles which act as a guide and constant inspiration to all its readers. This is worth carrying wherever we go and use it as a ready reckoner, just to open and swallow a pill of inspired thought. I am sure it will make us think and act intelligently and also save us from becoming the victims of various challenging situations.
The first shloka opens with the letter 'a' and deals with 'annam', food. It says annadanam as a great charity. It is worthy to start with a note reminding us of two important things of life, one is food and second is charity. We can bring out many facets of the above simple looking thought.
First of all, Annam is that which is consumed. It is consumable food and all beings depend on it. Our physical bodies are called as 'annamaya shareera', i.e. our bodies are nothing but the modification of food. It is on food that the whole world is depending. It is for sake of food that all the beings are carrying on their worldly activities. Alas, minus hunger in this world, the world would come to a standstill. While Anna daanam is noble, Vidya daanam, which is donating knowledge is more superior and quenches the intellectual thirst. This book is quenching such intellectual thirst of its readers.
