The idea of this book germinated and developed sometime before 1989, the centenary year of Jawaharlal Nehru. At that time it was proposed to bring out a monograph throwing light on the multifaceted personality and thought of Nehru. Initially, we intended to approach only scholars of the University of Jodhpur for this purpose. But soon the plan was modified. At the suggestion of Dr. S. R. Goyal, Professor and Head, Department of History, University of Jodhpur, it was decided to invite some scholars from other places also in order to enrich the contents of the monograph and to exclude the 'personality' aspect of Nehru and concentrate on the 'thought' aspect, so as to make it more compact.
However, all these things proved to be quite time-consuming and, therefore, the monograph could not be brought to light in 1989. But as the importance of Nehru's thought is not bound with any date and is an evergreen subject, we are bringing it out now, in 1994, with the age-old saying better late than never as our justification.
