About the Book
The book entitled "Some Aspects of Indian Society and Culture" is a collection of various articles contributed by the Ph. D. scholars and other students of Prof. A. K. Haldar. This book is a felicitation volume in the honour of Prof. A. K. Haldar who has been superannuated after serving the Department of Anthropology, Ranchi University as a teacher for about three decades. The books has been divided into six major chapters. In addition to those chapters there is an introduction which deals with development issues followed by other articles. The major sections of the book are ethnographic note of selected communities, tribal health, politics and education of tribals, occupational mobility and socio political change, economic and development issues and finally communication & culture. All the articles are the outcome of the Ph.D work of the concerned students of Prof. A. K. Haldar. In view of present relevance and significance the present book will be highly useful to the scholars who are pursuing their Ph.D work and also will be helpful to these students who belong to different branches of social science.

About the Authors
Pradip K. Bhowmick (Born: 1955) did his M. A. in Rural Development from S. V. University, Tirupati. In the year 1988, he was awarded Ph. D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. The D. Litt has also been credited to his career from Ranchi University in the year 1998. At present he is an Associate Professor in the Rural Development Centre, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Dr. Bhowmick published different articles on variou issues related to Tribal and Rural Development in Teputed journals. He has authored some of the books namely Dynamics of Tribal Development (1993), Rural and Tribal Development Practices in India (1994), Tribal Literacy in the West Bengal (2000), Ecology, Tribals and Rural Development: The Case from West Bengal (2001), Land Reformi and Rural Development in the state of West Bengal (2001), Delivery Services among the Tribal Communities of Bengal and Orissa (2002). He is also co-author of the books namely Tribal Movement (1994), Land and Forest: Twin Tribal Problems (1998) Dr. Bhowmick, author of several research papers is keenly interested in teaching, training and conducting researches among the rural and tribal communities.

Nabakumar Duary (Born: 1965) obtained M.Sc. in Social -Cultural Anthropology from the University of Calcutta. He has been awarded Ph.D degree from the Ranchi University. Dr. Duary worked in the Institute of Social Research and Applied Anthropology, Kolkata as a Research Fellow and served the Anthropological Survey of India (An.S.I.), Kolkata and Ranchi as a Junior Research Fellow. At present he is working as Research Asssociate (Cultural) in An. S. L., Kolkata. He has research experience of more than one decade and has conducted empirical study among major tribal communities including the Primitive Tribal Groups in West Bengal, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh. He has published more than one dozen of research articles in different edited books and journals and made significant eontributions in the field of Anthropology. He has been associated with many professional organizations and is life member of the various anthropological research institutions.

Preface
Former Post Doctoral as well as Ph. D. Students and affectionate friende of Professor A K. Haldar wanted to bring out a felicitation volume on the eve of his superannuation after serving for about three decades as a teacher in the department of Anthropology, Ranchi University, Jharkhand Professor A. K. Haldar rightly deserves a citation. Born in 1943 in Shyamganj village of Midnapore district of West Bengal. Prof. Haldar grew as a disciplined child of his parents, Sri Haramohan Haldar and Smt. Shankari Haldar. As a student of Anthropology in the department of Anthropology Ranchi University and as a researcher, he was exposed to many anthropologista of national and international repute. He was awarded Ph.D. degree for his work on the Mining Labours ofChotonagpur under the guidance of Prof L. P. Vidyarthi. He was closely associated with Prof. Vidyarthi in a number of research projects. Prof. Haldar is famous to his students for the examples and references he cited while teaching them. His conscience, modesty, equity and ever preparedness to indulge field of industrialisation; Mining labour of Chotanagpur, Artisan Tribe and Muslim Caste, Cognitive Studies, Tribal Education, Art & Craft, Occupational Mobility (Tribal), Application of Emic & Etic Approach, Tribal Development: Peoples Participation, Panchayati Raj Institution, Tribal Health and Tribal Communication had made him popular to his friends and gave academic credibility to him. Prof. Haldar having background of Anthropology showed his expertise by attracting various students of different social science discipline. This has been reflected by producing more than two dozen number of Ph.D. students who completed their research work under his able guidance.

We, his students are taking this opportunity with foil responsibility of bringing out this felicitation volume entitled "Some aspects of Indian Society and Culture" we requested mainly to his students to contribute papers. We received 22 papers in all. Topics mainly were covered by the students with reference to their Ph.D, work.
