When my esteemed and dear friend Prof. A. K. Saran asked me to write a Foreword to the present work, I accepted the suggestion readily since I deem it a privilege to be associated with his writing even though the association may resemble a bädarayana-sambandha. Nevertheless I also feel embarrassed owing to my awareness of my inadequacy and lack of adhikara in what is the principal theme of Prof. Saran's discussion in this work. There is, of course, another reason for my willingness to write this Foreword and that is my profound admiration for the deep insight and incisive rigour of Prof. Saran's thought with which I find myself in essential agreement. I write the Foreword as a personal homage to what is undoubtedly an outstanding work of our times.
