Book Description

Foreword On 5th November 1999, the renowned American physicist Prof. Charles Townes, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics, in 1964 for his outstanding works on MASER (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emis- sion of Radiation) and LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation), visited The Asiatic So- ciety, Kolkata, to receive the Rabindranath Tagore Plaque for 1999, awarded to him by The Asiatic Society.

On this occasion Prof. Townes delivered a highly illu- minating lecture on 'Sociology and Unpredictability of Science and Technology,' at the Vidyasagar Hall of the Society. This talk evoked quite a large interest amongst the audience, composed of a large number of academics of the city besides the members of the Society. Some of them requested me to publish the sum and substance of this lecture, as a monograph, on behalf of the Society.
