About the Book This book seeks to trace socio-economic history of Odisha both in the pre and post- globalisation period. It dilates upon the cultural traits of Odisha that have been an important part of the state's heritage. It examines the factors that led to the globalisation process and critically analyses the impact, both positive and negative, of globalisation on socio-economic situation in the state of Odisha. Besides, this book makes a comparative analysis of the society and culture in Odisha during pre- and post- globalisation era.

About the Author Dr. Manas Ranjan Debata has retired as Additional Secretary to the Government of Odisha after serving the state for over 30 years as an officer of the Odisha Administrative Service (OAS). Dr. Manas was awarded M.Phil and Doctoral degrees from Sambalpur University, Sambalpur, and MA degree from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, and Odisha. Dr. Debata has travelled several prestigious universities in Europe, Singapore etc. in connection with his research work. Dr. Manas has authored a book State of Nayagarh during British Rule: Society, Culture and Economy (2018), and edited the book titled Gender and Development: Perspective to Practice (2018).

Foreword Globalisation is the higher stage of internationalization backed by Transactionalisation and converging to Universalisation. It encourages inward and outward socio-economic and cultural orientation to achieve international competitiveness for different countries in the world and India is not an exception to it. Based on the principle of microeconomic efficiency and macroeconomic stabilisation, Indian economy is determined to stand out among competitive economies on its strength of inherited and created resources. Globalisation is a source of inspiration for the proper use of endowed natural resources and human resource development prioritising higher education along with technological and infrastructure development under the auspices of technological upgradation through sophisticated technology and qualitative technological education with skill formation.

Preface The state of Odisha, one of the richest reservoirs of natural and mineral resources of India, has a unique socio-cultural history. With India achieving independence on 15 August 1947, the princely states in and around Odisha surrendered their sovereignty to the Government of India and completely merged on 19 August 1949 giving birth to a new province of Odisha. The post-independence task for Indian leadership largely revolved round the issues of nation building, restructuring of socio-economic set up and above all securing and safeguarding national unity and territorial integrity. As part of the reorientation of a diverse socio-economic milieu, Indian government paid attention to provinces such as Odisha, which are impoverished and underdeveloped, despite possessing vast natural resources and great cultural heritage. In this context, this book delineates the social, economic and cultural history of Odisha both in the pre- globalisation period (1949-1991) and the post-globalisation era (from 1992 till date) through a comparative study.
