PREFACE

India has witnessed many social movements over the centuries. The history of such movements used to be ventilated by the sociologists and anthropologists. But in recent times historians have taken up this work seriously. This is an effort to fulfill the gap of a regional study. The historiography of such group of writing at the national level placed us to think about such micro level work. Itis obvious when the scholars of history pick up such study, one would be tempted to study the social structure, social processes, culture economic structure political power and interrelationships among them. In India context social movements of the pre-indepedence period particularly of the 19th century and early 20th century had the interrelationship of the post independent social movements. When we started this work, we thought of keeping the scope only to contemporary India. But, after materials were collected, we thought to trace back the history of social movements to pre-independent period. In comparing the socio-economic and political aspects, Religious part is not touched upon fully. With a hope to cater the need of the researchers and general readers, the work has been developed.
