European scholars and statesmen writing on India have been studied from a wide variety of perspectives; a similar attention has eluded the writings by contemporary women authors. It is a well-documented fact that many English women came to India during the colonial period and have left interesting accounts of their residence on the sub-continent. The present work Social and Cultural Depictions of India-1700 to 1850 (The Memsahibs' Narrations) relies on writings of these women as invaluable sources in the understanding of the private/domestic domains; of narrations replete with rich descriptive details of the everyday lives of the women in the family/household; their views on gender issues; etc. as these women attempted to establish a microcosm of the family and environment corresponding back home on the distant and alien soil of India.

Dr. Shalini Awasthi is presently working as Associate Professor at the Delhi Institute of Heritage Research and Management (DIHRM). She has been actively involved in all aspects of Heritage Management, especially those in the field of Epigraphy and Numismatics, Heritage Tourism, Heritage Planning, Zoning and Regulation, etc. She has coedited the 5 Volume work: Triratna, Heritage Governance and Equity. She has also been the editor of the in house journal of DIHRM, "Rakshitri", for a number of years, and has authored/ coauthored a number of articles for reputed journals.
