It is a matter of immense pleasure to present Shivanamakalpalatalavala' of Sri Bhaskararaya with the commentary 'Sudhapura' of Sri Venkata chala Pandita to the world of scholars. It is hoped that the present work will be warmly welcomed by the Sanskritists in general and devotees of Lord Shiva in particular. The Work: 108 divine names of Shiva enume rated in the Skandapurana, Sivarahasya etc., are well known. Saivites hold these names in high esteem and consider Siva's worship with these names a way to attain all wishes including supreme emancipation. Hence, this string of 108 names (Ashtottarasatanamavali) is called Kalpalata i.e., a wish-fulfilling creeper. Sri Bhaskarara ya, the author of the present work, has made a basin, as it were, for that creeper in 108 verses. Hence the name of the work. The speciality of the work also lies in the fact that each of the verses has been com posed in different metres, i.e. 108 metres have been used in the work. Thus a study of this work pro duces not only merit but also a knowledge of Sanskrit prosody. The verses are pregnant with meaning and also possess exquisite charm.
