Sister Nivedita (1867-1911), who had dedicated her all to India, was an exemplary embodiment of strength, sacrifice, and all-consuming passion for India. With her keen insight and brilliant intellect, she influenced and contributed in the fields of education, science, art, social welfare, and even revolutionary politics. She wanted 'organised unselfishness' for nation-building.
Nivedita, who was almost forgotten behind the dust of Time except by some passionate lovers of India, has been brought to limelight again during her 150th birth year. More and more Indians, especially the youth, must recapitulate her inspiring life and passionate love for India and all that was Indian.
Raising to the occasion, Debaprasad Bhattacharya has presented her life and contribution to India in a brief yet effective compass by compiling material from various authentic sources and rendering it to suit to the taste of young readers. We are dedicating this book to the 'Dedicated' on her 150th Birth Anniversary.
We have included an edited version of some extracts from Sankari Prasad Basu's article on 'Nivedita and Jagadish Chandra' published in Nivedita Commemoration Volume by Vivekananda Janmotsava Samiti, Kolkata, and letters of Jagadish Chandra Bose to Miss Josephine MacLeod regarding Nivedita as appendices to highlight how Nivedita inspired and influenced Jagadish Chandra Bose and what he felt about her.
Swami Lakshmidharananda has edited the book, apart from interspersing it with relevant photographs. We thank Mr. William Page and Sri Alok Paul for diligent proofreading and valuable suggestions.
Sister Nivedita, who was a beacon of inspiration for innumerable Indians from various walks of life in the past, will continue to kindle in the readers of this book the spark of commitment to build a glorious India. We invoke the blessings of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda on all those who worked for the book and on all those who read and assimilate.
