THIS book is based on the original Tamil Edition of Lifco's "Samaippadu Eppadi" and subsequent English version, "How to Cook", both written by my late aunt (Athai), Smt. Vedavalli Venkatachary that essentially describe South Indian Iyengar cooking.
The original inspiration for all these recipes was Vedavalli's mother, Late. Smt. Jayalakshmi Sarma. As mother of big orthodox family, cooking was an all-day-long job for my grandmother. Her approach to cooking was unique for her generation: she believed in cooking simple, healthy and tasty food for her family. Her invaluable tips and insights into the making of a dish were truly remarkable. So, at the end of many recipes you'll find a small message from her, captioned -"Jaya Paati says".
Keeping in mind today's hectic lifestyle and health awareness, I have re-written all recipes in a new format, as a sequence of steps to be followed one after the other. The focus of this book is cooking healthy traditional food, without compromising on taste and so, the use of oil and salt in all dishes is low. However, the dishes have appropriate flavours to keep them delicious.
All the recipes are measured for 2 people. The measurements to be adjusted for more people accordingly.
