Bhagavan in the Gita has spoken about yoga, yogi, yogic realization in almost every sloka. Not only that, He has also advised Arjuna to become a yogi. Counselling on yogasadhana to Arjuna, Bhagavan has clearly stated - 'Pratakshabagamam, dharmyam susukham kartumabyam'. This soul-knowledgelike yogadharma confers results directly, can be practised in absolute comfort and whatever little can be practised is imperishable indestructible. The reason why this yogadharma can be practised in comfort is because to practise this sadhana no type of external relinquishment, changing of garb or any ostentation are required. This sadhana being scientific discomfort does not ensue, body and mind can be maintained healthily, no type of superficial relinquishment is required, solely the mind and Prana are required for this practice. Deaf, dumb, blind, lame, male, female, high caste, low caste, saints, householders, persons belonging to any religion, irrespective of all these this yogasadhana can easily be practised. Practising this yogasadhana a direct realisation of the spiritual world ensues. Sadhana will be practised now, results will accrue later, yogadharma never propounds this, just as drinking of water now to quench the thirst later is implausible, yogasadhana is similar to this.
My Grandfather Mahapurusha Bhagavan Sri Shyamacharan Lahiri Mahasaya maintaining a family existence, not relinquishing anything superficial, earning his own livelihood in other words being a complete Householder juxtaposing practice of yogasadhana has set a rare example for mankind. Daily what were His yogasadhana realisations, He has meticulously written in His confidential diaries, this type of example set by any other Mahapurusha is not known. It can be clearly understood while going through His realisations that a yogi who is at the acme of profound knowledge and realisations can only pen them, not otherwise.
A few days earlier the realisations of my Grandfather which have been provided by me for Sri Ashoke Kumar Chatterjee to write an authentic Biography on Him named "Purana Purusha Yogiraj Sri Shamachun Lahiree" and which has already been published; have been meticulously culled together. This Biography has therefore created ripples amongst spiritually thirsty people. This invaluable Biography has already been published in Bengali and Hindi and endeavours are being made to publish it in other regional languages along with English.
The manner this book has been accepted amongst the masses irrespective of caste, creed proves that man yearns to enlighten himself about this scientific sastra-approved eternal yogasadhana; but at present there being a dearth of true teachers and Gurus, the spiritually yearning souls are not deriving the reach for this immortal yogasadhana, as a result is failing to comprehend its abstruse esotery.
Thus the direct realisations of my Grandfather is losing out on the comprehension of the subtle nuances. Moreover I understood these realisations at a later date might become diluted in explanations if executed by the incorrect yogis. Hence I realised those infallible realisations will impart benefit for mankind, but at this old age to execute this mammoth task is impossible for me. Therefore I entrusted this herculean task to the author of "Purana Purusha" who is absolutely like my son, Sri Ashoke Kumar Chatterjee. He has scrupulously tirelessly dedicatedly rendered expatiations to those abstruse yogic esoteries latent in Sri Shyamachurn Lahiree Mahasaya's realisations. Eventually I have been immensely contented going through Ashoke's connotations. At this eighty years of age I have a strong belief that this book will benefit all Kriyabans along with spiritually thirsty people. I hope that present and future mankind will endear this holy book in their hearts.
Bharata is the land of yogis. Without knowing yoga a yogi cannot be known, similarly without knowing a yogi spiritual Bharata cannot be known. Thus the prescript is yogasadhana and one and all should imperatively practise this yogasadhana. But unfortunately today false propaganda regarding Sanatana yoga is prevalent. For instance yoga should not be practised by people of Kaliyuga. Are people belonging to Kaliyuga not humans? Humans the way they were born, lived, died, is it not the same today? Happiness misery, household existence, all prevailed, prevails today also. Wherein lies the difference? Difference is only in one regard. This is, previously almost all were wholly believers in God, practised yogasadhana, lived simple lives. During those days the ones who did not practise yogasadhana were castigated upon. But today the contrary holds supreme. Most of today's generation is luxury and comfort oriented with innumerable demands and devoid of Godly orientation. Today if anyone does not practise yogasadhana he is not castigated instead non-sadhana oriented affluent man is regarded as being important. At present when a majority is non-dedicated to spirituality, then it is not possible for them to repose faith in God. Yet if such a congregation is pushed towards the path of devotion, then is it possible for them to practise sadhana? They lack the basic ingredient, therefore if they are forcibly pushed into it then it will result in harm. Devotion is important, barring devotion sadhana on God is not possible. Thus this devotion has to be acquired initially. The path of yoga teaches how to acquire that devotion at first, later after devotion has been achieved it will facilitate the sadhana process. Hence who can be a greater devotee than a yogi? Yogi is regarded to be the supreme devotee. The ones who are ignorant that is the ones who are harbouring incorrect notions of the soul-essence or Brahma- Knowledge, they are the ones who segregate the path of yoga from the path of devotion. They are unaware of the fact that barring yoga- action true devotion cannot ensue. Therefore yogakarma is the sole alternative for the attainment of soul-knowledge. For the one who is not a yogi, for him to deride yoga path is not ethical, because he himself is devoid of yoga-knowledge. For such an ignorant one who poses as an erudite he can at the most incite inexperienced ignorant man, but can never impart welfare to humanity.
The principal action of yoga is centred on breath. This breathing motion exists in one and all. When this breath is the only source of sustenance in all living beings, then barring that support how can sadhana on god be executed? Because of the existence of the breathing motion, carnal desires, anger, greed, covetousness etc. manifest in the body which act as deterrents in the sadhana path, the mind spontaneously attains an external orientation. How can the correct devotion prevail in such an externally oriented mind? Thus internalising the mind, the path to gain true devotion is yoga. Just as confined space is not disunited from infinite space; similarly the living being soul (jivatma) is certainly not disunited from the Paramatma (Infinite Soul). Hence all beings are constantly united with the Infinite Soul. But due to kineticism, temporarily it seems to be disunited. For this reason in eventuality everyone is a yogi, but none have the attention towards that united state. If one practises Pranakarmalike yogakarma regularly one can directly pay attention to that united state; then the yogi realises he is never detached from the Infinite Soul, then only he is termed as a yogi. For this reason everyone is a yogi, but some knowing about this is a yogi, some not knowing about this also is a yogi.
Many harbour the erroneous notion that the path of yoga being difficult is not meant for everyone. If yoga path was difficult, if humanity of Kaliyuga were incapacitated then how did Yogiraj Sri Shamachurn Lahiree Mahasaya advocate this? Not only did He advocate this by existing within the family ambit maintaining a household existence, but executing all responsibilities without abandoning anything external, practised austere yogasadhana side by side. Did He not belong to Kaliyuga? He has left this mortal world 124 years hence; thus it is not an interminably long period. At a later date many abiding by His path of yogasadhana have attained success in their lives. Thus if man gets befuddled through confused ones themselves by abandoning yogakarma then total humanity will have to bear the brunt of it which will be harmful, there is no doubt in this. The exercise of increasing the strength of one's group by perplexing simple mankind and disorienting them, in actuality cannot confer benefit to humanity at large. The path of yoga does not favour any sort of groupism, instead propounds the contrary.
