Book Description

About the Book

Most people sow to destiny Rare are those who mould destiny and transcend circumstances to carve out an unforgettable niche for themselves. Those are the people we recall in awe, and remember in gratinade because their legacy prevails despite the passage of ume. Shanti Swarup Bhamagar, architect extraordinaire of newly Independent India's S&T drram, was one such. As a fatherless infant, his life story could easily have been one of unmitigsted tragedy yet his personality, even as a child, attracted an intervention that paved the way to the fall flowering of his natural talents.

His life history reads like a fairytale it is replete with stories of hurdles and opportunities in equal measure. At every crossroad, Shanti Swarup chose correctly steering well his own progress, and that of the nascent nation's. His actions continue to contribute to India's stature as an S&T power, even today.

His is the story of struggle and triumph against all odds. It is also a tale about how a fledgling, nation, battling economic hardships and striving to re-establish its position in the comity of nations, managed to lay down a chain of national laboratories dedicated to the branches of science that would be most relevant to the national cause.

This book is a small thanksgiving from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research to one of the Founding Fathers: a man who brought it into existence, whose dreams shaped its form and whose actions breathed life into its constituent laboratories.

It is a tale about perseverance, a tale of true grit and in the end, a great human story about a scientist who was a poet at heart, a wonderful husband and father, guru who led from the front, a dreamer of dreams, an indefatigable worker and a karmayegi par excellence.
