Shamas Faqir (1843-1901) occupies a distinctive place among the Sufi poets of Kashmir. He lived at Chinkral Mohalla, in Srinagar. He didn't receive formal education, but became apprentice to Niama Saheb, a Kashmiri Sufi poet. He became a disciple of Souch Maliar, Abdul Rehman of Barzulla, Atiq-Ullah of Gulab Bagh, Mohammad Jammal and Rasool Saeb. Niama Saheb, Waza Mahmood, Wahab Khar and Ahmad Batawari were some of his contemporary poets and friends. Shamas Faqir's mystic poetry contains a tune and tenor of highest spiritual thought and it serves as an elixir water for those who tread on the path of achieving the sacred goal. From a literary point of view also, his poetry possesses qualitative merit in terms of thought, expression and thematic freshness.
Shamas-ud-din Ahmad (1931-2008) was a prominent writer and reputed scholar of Persian, Urdu and Kashmiri language and Literature. He joined the University of Kashmir as a Lecturer in 1952 and held key positions in the University for more than three decades. He has widely toured across the globe and served as a visiting professor in the reputed universities of Iran, Middle & Central Asian Countries. Besides producing some remarkable original works in Persian and English, he has carried translation of five major Classical Persian works in Kashmiri. He has been awarded Presidents' Award for his outstanding contribution to Persian language and literature.
