Servant of the Servant is a colourful multi-faceted portrait of the founder of the Hare Krishna Movement, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and of the movement which he established, as seen through the eyes and actions of one of his senior-most disciples, Srila Tamal Krishna Goswami. With the help of numerous letters and intimate personal encounters with Srila Prabhupada, the author has managed to weave a fine tapestry of great spiritual truth while main- taining a most refreshing and entertaining style. Readers can share freely in the intimacy of the guru-disciple relationship and at the same time receive a grassroots view of ISKCON during its first years of growth. Beginning at the time of Srila Goswami's joining the movement in 1968 through to one of the most exciting times in ISKCON's history, the Christmas Marathon of 1975, one feels the pulse of this dynamic movement on every page. Servant of the Servant brings the wealth and vast knowledge of Vedic culture and history into a practical present-day perspective, and yet it's purity and instructions ensure that it will stand all tests of time.
Servant of the Servant contains the letters that I received from my spiritual master. His Divine Grace Om Visnupada Paramahamsa Parivrajakācārya Astottara-sata Sri Srimad A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. His Divine Grace wrote many thousands of letters, especially to his disciples. Such correspondence enabled him to guide his disciples individually in their spiritual advancement as well as direct the activities of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, which he founded. Of course, the main guidance was and continues to be his transcendental books, more than sixty in number. But taken as a whole, his letters form an important part of his literary output. In them will be found the eternal philosophy of Krsna consciousness as he received it in disciplic succession coming from Krsna. These letters are especially significant because Śrila Prabhupada, as the founder of the worldwide Krsna consciousness movement, used them to describe how this philosophy could be practically applied to every aspect of spiritual life for this day and age.
To receive a letter from Srila Prabhupada was nondifferent from personally associating with him. Whether in conversation or by correspondence, he unfailingly established Krsna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He quotes amply from sastra, cites evidence from history, relates humorous Bengali stories, and shares freely his own personal experiences and observations. Invariably the result is that one is brought closer to Krsna. His correspondence is never dull or dry, never mundane. As Prabhupada explained, whatever he wrote was directly dictated to him by Lord Krsna; therefore by careful study of these letters one can imbibe transcendental knowledge and realization from the intimate associate of the Lord.
