If there be any universal catalogue of religious scriptures, SRIMADBHAGAVADGITA will definitely have an earmarked place in the list. It is not simply a Hindu religious scripture; it is a scripture of the whole humanity wherein the Lord Himself, in the Divine manifest of Sri Krsna, the central figure in the epic of Mahabharata or more correctly the whole of that epoch (Dvapar Yuga) persuades Arjuna to fight for the right cause. This sermon delivered by Sri Krsna to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kuruksetra may be treated a symbolic representation of the preachings or commandments from Narayana (The Absolute Brahma) to Nara (Arjuna in the form of the entire mankind) for leading a successful and righteous life by way of Niskama Karmayoga or Communion through selfless action. If, one wants to overcome wordly discomfort, depression, decay, disease and death, one should pursue the path of devotion to duty assigned as per Prakrtik Guna (Mode of Nature) with utmost sincerity dedicated to the Divinity. Or, in simple words, one should perform one's duties unconcerned with the fruit.
