About the Author Paramahamsa Hariharananda, born in 1907 in West Bengal, India, was a great, realized master in Kriya Yoga. He attained nirvikalpa samadhi, the breathless, pulseless state, the long-cherished goal of all aspirants in the spiritual path in 1948. A direct disciple of Swami Shriyukteshwar and Paramahamsa Yogananda, the author of the Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahamsa Hariharananda was a unique spiritual preceptor who spread the teachings of Kriya Yoga in the East and West and established ashrams and centers in India, Europe, and North and South America. Well versed in scriptures, he was the author of many books. He was a truly great, yet extremely humble, soul with a deep compassion for humanity. He was an incarnation of love, compassion, and service. He attained mahasamadhi (the conscious departure from the physical body) in 2002, at the age of ninety-five.

A significant part of his legacy is evident in the charitable works he committed to throughout his lifetime. Through the Hariharananda Charitable Health Centers, thousands of people in need receive medical care and supplies every year. A variety of outreach and educational programs have been implemented including mobile medical and dental services and a residential school for underprivileged youths. The legacy of this great teacher lives on through the love and lives of his students.

Foreword Every word that proceeds from the mouth of a realized master, or is written by him, is a shower of blessings and love. It touches the heart and soothes it. It ignites and inspires the mind. It sharpens the intellect, and makes it discriminative. Every word of the master is a spiritual wealth to be treasured in one's heart and memory.

Gurudev Paramahamsa Hariharananda oftentimes dictated articles and teachings on different topics for various purposes, sometimes to be published in journals. His messages are beautiful, heart-touching, and self-motivating. The soul-stirring ideas and messages given on these various occasions are compiled under the title Selected Essays. It covers a wide range of spiritual problems, and gives beautiful and practical solutions to them starting with which type of food one should eat, discussing moderation in daily life, speaking on astrology, and even maya, and ultimately leading to the discovery of the Self.

This book, Selected Essays, is undoubtedly a compendium of the thoughts of the realized master presented into the hands of travelers on the spiritual path.
