Poets are born and not made and finding an abode in muse's bower is a divine gift.
One such gifted poor and writer is Pujya Sri Mathi Oll R. Saraswathy. She started writing poems from her early teens and what started as a pastime turned out to be a serious venture. A versatile artist, a genius and a thinker par excellence, Mathi Oli requires no introduction to the literary world. Any such attempt w ould be like carrying coal to New Castle. A prolific writer, she has authored several books, numbering more than fifty and it should be said to her credit that all are masterpieces. No field of Tamil literature has been left untouched by her Books on philosophy and ethics, poems for all and children, stories for children, books on scientifie facts and medicine, biographies, translations and plays all have received her golden touch, In each of her book she has a message to deliver and this she has done successfully. This book Seeds is a translation of her book Vithaigal, published in 1998 The book is a storehouse of wisdom, a vast sea that houses in its depth precious pearls and coral and you have to dive deep before reaping the benefit of the sea treasures.
Mathi Oli has her own lucid forcible style, which cannot be ba brought our in any other language She has a sweet, singular emphatic style. The words how like a river of nectar but they are potent and have the strength of a tornado to spite of the language barrier justice has been done as far as possible. Comes, gather the seeds, plant them in your garden and gather the fruits.
I was sitting with my hands joined together, as though in worship. As only my fingers' ends were joined, the conical shape suggested to me the shape of a seed. I sowly disjoined the folded hands and now they gave me the appearance of the two halves of a sprouting seed.
Our folded hands plead before God and the opened ones get what God gives us. The seed knows this immeasurable mercy of God right from the beginning of its growth. But we pray only at times of need and as soon as our prayers are granted, we conveniently forget God.
God desires to place before us certain truths through the seed. God says, "I know your needs. I shall place all that you require in your folded hands." Don't we hear these words of God when we look at the seeds.
My musings have sown several thoughts in my mind. But some have been blown away by the wind like the silk cotton that comes out bursting forth from the boll. Some have been sown, carefully nurtured and have given a good yield.
Now the ideas that I have poured forth here are not new. Everybody knows them. Yet, we conveniently forget them and try to climb up to the sky, but struggle and fall down. To save you from your pitiable state, to enable you to draw back your mind and faculties and strengthen them, I beckon you through this my book 'Seeds'.
Land should be frequently cultivated to keep it fertile. Then only we will come to know about its suitability and the crops that could be grown. It would become uncultivable, if allowed to remain fallow for a long time. So also with our mind. Weeds, mushrooms and poisonous creepers need not be cultivated. They will grow of their own accord. Similarly unhealthy thoughts would creep into us of their own accord. They should not be allowed to find root, but purged out immediately. We should harbor only pious and just thoughts. There is no use in wasting our time. When time is wasted, good thoughts are also laid to waste.
We should read several books on science of polity and ethics. The ideas read should be absorbed and put into practice. When this is done your conscience will not allow you to go astray or on the wrong path.
The essays found here were not written with any set of ideas, nor were the ways of their presentation determined. What I have given you in the following pages are stray and random thoughts that arose in me now and then and they all have been put together. They may be seeds of the neem spit out by birds or those of papal tree.
Water is obtained by digging the earth. Gold and precious stones are also obtained from underneath the earth. Rocks are cleaved and the chisel that did that work presents us with a beautiful image of a deity. These are all intricacies that we should try to understand and then march on and be perfect.
farmer sows his seeds placing faith on the soil. Similarly, I have placed before you these articles with a purpose behind them, with a fond hope that these seeds will take deep roots in you and in course of time bear delicious fruits. No doubt, as you turn the pages, you may feel the subject to be heavy.
But be patient and try to assimilate the ideas, for, they are the seeds of your success.
Seeds are the foundation for anything and everything. Within them they carry on the lives of the future. They are the symbol of gradual growth and not of early miracles. They will give success as the reward for your continuous effort. Let care, hope, efficiency, virtues and straight forwardness be sown, and God Himself will take care of us and these qualities will bear fruit.
