The Scientific Sufi: The Life and Times of Jagadish Chandra Bose is the definitive English biography of the father of modern science in India, Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose. He came close to, and as many believe was robbed of, winning at least two Nobel Prizes for his work on wireless communication and the discovery of the nervous system in plants.
This biography carefully reconstructs his life-work, legacy, childhood, early years and influences-and paints an intimate portrait of the icon we know as the father of modern science in India.
Dr Meher Wan is a scientist at CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (NISCPR), New Delhi. He is also an assistant professor at the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (ACSIR). Meher has previously worked at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur as a prestigious institute post-doctoral fellow in the Advanced Technology Development Centre and is a member of the Indian National Young Academy of Sciences.
Jagadish Chandra Bose is considered to be the 'Father of Modern Science in India'. He had chosen to do his research work in India and had refused several lucrative offers from the West to shift his lab work despite the humiliation and extreme resistance he faced for his research in India. He had achieved and established the tall standards not only for India but also for researchers worldwide. The greatest leaders of the then scientific world praised him and his research tirelessly while he was simultaneously demeaned in his own country. A nationalist to the core, he set the stage for modern science and technology in India and also made the countrypersons proud by earning the respect of the greatest from around the world. Several of his students got nominated for the Nobel Prize for their scientific contributions while working in India. Sir J.C. Bose worked till his last breath and sacrificed everything for his country and people. He did not participate in the big political movements, nor did he acquire fame among revolutionaries, but his style of resistance was unique and one of a kind.
