Book Description
About The Book

The science of Yoga according to Lord Dattatreya', is a compendium of the Yogic practices followed during the ancient times. This book is in the form of a dialogue between Lord Dattatreya and a seeker named Sankriti. A brief description of the different paths viz.; Hatha, Laya, Mantra and Raja Yoga is given in the book. However, the practices of Hatha Yoga are emphasized more.

Lord Dattatreya is considered to be the incarnation of three divinities viz.; Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. He is a great Yogi and is believed that he taught the knowledge of "Sri Vidya' to Lord Parasurama. For the followers of the paths of Siddha and Avadhuta, he is the supreme master. The various sadhana practices briefly explained in this book have to be learned from a competent Guru as it is not possible to explain all the hidden meanings in a book.

We feel our efforts are not in vain if this little book makes the reader to practice Yoga diligently.

Foreword

Lord Dattatreya is the Divine Son of Sage Atri and his wife Anasuya. He is considered as the incarnation of the three divinities viz., Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. For the followers of the Avadhuta path, and some paths of Yoga and Tantra, he is the supreme God.

This book is in the form of a dialogue between Lord Dattatreya and a seeker named Sankriti. The author of this book prays to Lord Nrisimha in the beginning. From this gesture, and also from the references to Buddhists, Kapalikas, Shramanas and Charvakas, we presume that this book belongs to the middle centuries. This book appears to be a short compendium of Yogic practices that belonged to a much older time.

This book tries to present at one place, all the practices of various branches of Yoga viz., Hatha Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Laya Yoga and Raja Yoga. The practices of Hatha Yoga viz., Mudras, Bandhas and Kriyas are briefly mentioned. Meditation on the five elements as taught in Kundalini Yoga is briefly touched upon. Similarly, practices like Vajroli, Sahajoli and Amaroli are explained.

All these Sadhanas are not needed by one and all. Only those who are full of toxins in their body, who never observe any control over their diet and regimen, and who are devoid of purity of Prana and subtle nerves called Nadis need to practice these techniques more and more. Sri Ramakrishna advised his devotees not to practice the techniques of Hatha Yoga extensively. There is a reason behind his warning.
